New Transportation Head Joins School District

Popkin

James L. Popkin joined the Great Neck Public Schools in April as the new supervisor of transportation. He replaces Dominick Cappelletti who retired. Mr. Popkin comes to Great Neck from the Syosset Central School District where he was the transportation specialist, a position he held since 2008. While there, he was responsible for all aspects of school bus transportation for over 6,800 students. He developed and implemented proposals that reduced per student transportation costs, and his changes in bus routing and scheduling saved Syosset several million dollars. Mr. Popkin also negotiated cost-saving contracts with several school bus companies and was instrumental in the successful completion of a project to streamline data sharing between Infinite Campus and Transfinder, a school bus routing program. Prior to Syosset, from 2001-08, Mr. Popkin was an administrative quality assurance specialist for the Office of Pupil Transportation, New York City Department of Education. He directed a staff of transportation specialists and implemented technology to improve student safety and bus route efficiencies. He was the liaison to the NYC Office of Emergency Management where he worked on plans for a citywide emergency evacuation. Commenting on his goals for school bus transportation in Great Neck, Mr. Popkin said: “Ensuring the safety of each student transported by the district will be my most pressing concern as the new supervisor of transportation. I expect that each child transported by our school district will be treated as if he or she were a child of my own. I will be an effective steward of our taxpayer and school district resources. I hope to build on the excellent Transportation Department made by Mr. Cappelletti.” Mr. Popkin is president of the Nassau County Chapter of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) and sits on the NYAPT Board of Directors. (NYAPT is a professional organization dedicated to the support, development, and representation of the professionals who are responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of New York’s school children.) He is a founding member of the Northeast Nassau Transportation Cooperative and a member of the Nassau County Transportation Cooperative Board of Directors. Mr. Popkin holds a Bachelor of Science in management from Johnson & Wales University, RI.
