*The Winter 1 Sports Meeting for all 7th and 8th grade students will be held on Tuesday, October 24th after school. Sports offered are Girls Volleyball, Boys Basketball, Boys Swim & Dive, Co-ed Winter Track.

*Please consider joining the SMS community for our kick-off event of the year regarding Relay for Life.  We are hosting a Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee's in New Hyde Park on Sunday, October 29th, from 8-10 AM.  Tickets are $10 each and includes pancakes, eggs, sausages, juice and coffee.  This is a wonderful community event where TEACHERS SERVE THE STUDENTS!!!  Click HERE for more info!

*On Thursday, November 9, the teachers and seventh grade students of Team Hero are hosting a Thank A Veteran event, a special event honoring men and women who have served our country in the armed forces.  Students will be interviewing veterans from the community, and will be recording their experiences. 

*All students in 7th Grade will be going on a field trip on Friday, November 17 to AMC Roosevelt Field 8 movie theatre in Garden City to view the film, Wonder (the day it opens nationwide).  Click HERE for all of the info.  Click HERE for the permission slip.

*October English Self Select seminars are with Miss Kostopoulos during period 5 on October 25th for Group A and October 26th for Group B

*The Community Action Committee  needs your help! The first Box Tops submission date for the 2017-18 school year is November 1, so please bring in your box tops to Ms. Bazzani and Mrs. Klein in room 623 as soon as possible.  All box tops that have been submitted by Friday, October 20 will be eligible for the November 1 collection date. Remember, Box Tops are worth ten cents each for our school.  Box Tops profits are used for community donations such as  our school-wide support of and participation in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event, and contributions to Autism Speaks and Donors Choose.   To find out more about the Box Tops for Education program, please visit: https://www.boxtops4education.com/​ .  Please bring in your Box Tops today!

*Academic Outreach, a peer-based tutoring program, will hold its inaugural session in the SMS library on Tuesday (10/17) at 3 PM.  It is during this meeting that middle school students get paired with high school tutors so that they can get regular help is certain subjects.  Academic outreach is a volunteer program and is not meant to replace extra help between a teacher and student. We look forward to seeing middle school students on Tuesday!

*South Middle has been honored as an official "No Place for Hate School". A few students and teachers attended a recognition ceremony at NYU and were awarded a banner that will be displayed in the main lobby.  Click HERE for a photo. 

*Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience.
